Events in Abergavenny & Surrounding Area 2012

 

2012 marks the 200th Anniversary of the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal.  To celebrate this milestone, events have been planned throughout the whole year. Take a look at their website for more details of what events are being held.

 

Saturday 31st March

South Wales Three Peaks Trial

The Three Peaks Challenge walk is arranged each year by the Cardiff Outdoor Group.  The Walk was first held in March 1963 and was designed for less experienced walkers who wanted to test their powers of endurance and skill at map reading.  It is the third oldest event of its type in the UK.

Crickhowell Music Festival

 

26th May - 5th June

Hay Festival

The world's biggest literature festival draws writers, critics, filmmakers, musicians, comedians, historians, scientists, environmentalists and politicians to an otherwise sleepy little town famed for its second-hand bookshops.  

  

3rd and 4th June

Abergavenny Steam Rally

Full steam ahead for the 35th Abergavenny Steam Rally in Bailey Park.

There will be a host of attractions to keep the whole family entertained .  There will be numerous Steam Traction Engines, several Fairground Organs, Vintage Cars, Commercial Vehicles, Classic Motorcycles and Vintage Tractors. Special events take place throughout the day, including the ever popular children versus traction engine tug of war!  You might even get the opportunity to drive a steam engine!

You can also indulge in some retail therapy, explore the Craft Marquee and numerous trade stands.  There are fairground rides to keep the children happy.  An event not to be missed!   

 

16th June  Abergavenny Eisteddfod

 

23rd and 24th June:   East Wales and Borders Vintage Club and Pandy Show at Blaengavenny  Farm,  Llanvihangel Crucorney , Abergavenny.  Auction on Saturday. Show with Pony Classes, homecraft classes, stalls and entertainment on Sunday.  Details 01873 890371

 

13th, 14th and 15th July

Abergavenny Festival of Cycling

Its been hailed as the most successful and biggest event of its kind in Wales.  Races for elite riders, youth and children – suitable for every-one.

 

14th July

Abergavenny Carnival

A fun event for all the family.  The floats parade through the town, ending their journey in Bailey Park.  The final product of weeks of preparation will be the It's A Knockout Competition for many participating teams to 'battle it out'

 

23rd – 26th July

Royal Welsh Show

Wales' Premier Agricultural Show, held at LLanelwedd, Builth Wells

 

30th July

Abergavenny Shire Horse Show

An annual event that takes place in Bailey Park.  An exhibition of wonderful Shire Horses.  Trade stands and children's activities.  

  

4th August

The Llanthony Valley & District Show 

Attractions include horse showing classes, showjumping, cattle and sheep classes, produce competition, children's races, gymkhana, beer race, rodeo and more. 

1st September

Pandy and Monnowside Ploughing Society Annual Event

Features tractor and horse ploughing, sheepdog trials, Sheep and Horse & Pony Classes.  Homecraft Section.  All enquiries: 01873 860637

 

15th – 16th September

Abergavenny Food Festival

The biggest and best 2 day Food Festival in the UK.  “Abergavenny is to Food as Cannes is to film” – Observer Food Monthly
