Abergavenny Castle and Museum: The castle is one of the best examples of a motte and bailey castle in Britain. Originally built approximately in 1087, it has a fascinating history, particularly the massacre of Welsh Nobles on Christmas Day 1175.
The museum is set in the grounds of a ‘ruined’ Norman castle.
The Tithe Barn of St.Mary’s Priory Church: Abergavenny’s newest visitor attraction. There is an Interpretation Centre, Learning Space, Tapestry Exhibition and Food Hall. Whatever your age there is something to interest you.
Borough Theatre: This 338 seat venue presents a year round programme of professional and community productions.
The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal: An idyllic 35 miles of rural waterway with an abundance of wildlife to see.
A little further – approximately 20 minutes
Big Pit Mining Museum: Discover the world of coal mining on a real underground tour with an ex miner. Then explore the original colliery buildings and exhibitions. I have yet to meet any-one aged 5 to 85 who have not enjoyed this experience.
Brecon Mountain Railway:
A 7 mile round trip on the steam locomotives enjoying panoramic views over the Taf Fechan reservoir to the Brecon Beacons.
Raglan Castle: Built close to the England - Wales border it saw fierce combat and bloodshed. It is undoubtedly the finest medieval fortress in Britain and is well worth a visit.
A little further again – approximately an hour
St. Fagan's Welsh Folk Museum, Cardiff: There are houses of all types, a chapel, church, farmstead, school and many more buildings at St. Fagan's All have been carefully taken down from their original sites, each stone being numbered, and then painstakingly moved to St. Fagan's and rebuilt right down to the last detail.
Dan-Yr-Ogof Show Caves: Described as the most spectacular show cave complex in Western Europe. There are three caves to explore, an iron age farm, dinosaur park, shire horse centre, dry ski slope and much more.
Ystradfellte Caves & Waterfalls: There are several Water falls to be seen as well as caves and don't miss the Waterfall that you can walk behind, Scwd Yr Eira.
